Preventative Botox is a non-surgical procedure designed to stop the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and other visible signs of age in the face. The procedure is becoming increasingly popular among 20- and 30-somethings, but questions persist about its safety and effectiveness. To better understand preventative Botox, let’s take a look at five questions surrounding this procedure.
Why do people receive preventative Botox?
Preventative Botox is frequently viewed as a proactive facial rejuvenation treatment. It is used to treat crow’s feet, frown lines and other visible signs of aging in the face that occur due to repetitive folding of the facial skin; this folding takes place when a person makes facial expressions. With preventative Botox, an individual can stop repetitive folding of the facial skin.
Can anyone undergo a preventative Botox treatment?
Botox has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on individuals age 18 and older. A Botox procedure can also be performed on patients under the age of 18 with consent from a legal guardian or parent.
Preventative Botox is rarely performed on patients 25 or younger. In some instances, patients in their mid-20s undergo preventative Botox. Or, in other cases, patients in their 30s receive preventative Botox.
Dr. Jonathan Cabin of the CENTER for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery performs a patient evaluation prior to a preventative Botox procedure. Dr. Cabin’s goal is to help a patient achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance. To accomplish this goal, Dr. Cabin requests a patient consultation to analyze an individual’s facial features, medical history and treatment goals. If Dr. Cabin believes a patient is a good candidate for preventative Botox, he then helps this individual prepare for treatment. On the other hand, if Dr. Cabin believes the risks of preventative Botox outweigh its rewards, he offers alternative treatments.
What should I expect during a preventative Botox treatment?
A typical preventative Botox procedure usually requires just a few minutes to complete. During the procedure, Dr. Cabin first maps out where the Botox needs to be injected and then performs the Botox treatment. The procedure is often pain-free, and upon completion, a patient can resume his or her normal activities.
Preventative Botox is commonly used to treat facial lines and wrinkles. The procedure also helps treat the following cosmetic concerns:
- Bunny lines
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead creases
The effects of Botox usually become transparent within a few days of treatment. These effects may last for up to four months.
What are the side effects of preventative Botox?
Preventative Botox side effects are generally minimal, and they may continue for up to one week following treatment. Some of the side effects associated with preventative Botox include:
- Stinging: The initial treatment site may sting for about 10 to 15 minutes after Botox injections.
- Swelling: Treatment site swelling sometimes persists for a few days after a preventative Botox procedure.
- Redness: Preventative Botox patients may experience facial redness for a few days after treatment; however, patients can apply makeup immediately following a preventative Botox procedure.
Dr. Cabin recommends patients apply sunscreen and wear a hat and clothing that covers the treated area any time they go outdoors after a preventative Botox procedure. These patients should use sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. They should apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before they go outdoors and reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours as well. Additionally, Dr. Cabin recommends preventative Botox patients avoid excess sun and heat exposure and strenuous exercise and activity until post-treatment swelling and redness disappear.
Is preventative Botox safe?
To date, millions of people have received Botox injections. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported approximately 7.2 million Botox procedures were performed in the United States in 2017; this represents a 2% year-over-year increase. Also, among these procedures, at least 1.4 million were performed on patients between the ages of 20 and 39.
Botox injections sometimes help patients revitalize their facial appearance, but they are not right for every individual, every time. To determine if preventative Botox is right for you, it is important to meet with an expert facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon like Dr. Cabin. That way, an individual can undergo an in-depth evaluation to determine if preventative Botox is the best course of action to accomplish his or her facial rejuvenation treatment goals.
Dr. Cabin has a simple philosophy: to provide clear communication and safe, effective treatment. He works with each preventative Botox patient and develops a custom facial rejuvenation treatment plan. This plan simultaneously minimizes patient risk and addresses a patient’s treatment goals. And together, Dr. Cabin and his patient will put this plan into action to achieve the best-possible preventative Botox treatment results.
