Facelift
A facelift is one of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures. It is used to treat visible signs of aging in the face and neck, resulting in a revitalized facial appearance.
Dr. Jonathan Cabin is a Los Angeles facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who believes in masterful care, particularly when it comes to facelift surgery. He is upfront and honest with facelift patients and responds to their treatment concerns and questions. Dr. Cabin also develops a personalized treatment plan to help each of his facelift patients maximize their surgery results.
What Is a Facelift?
Facelift surgery treats sagging skin, excess fat deposits, jowls or the loss of youthful contours in the face and neck. Although a facelift won't stop the natural aging process, it helps correct wrinkles, expression lines and other visible signs of aging in the face and neck.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to facelift procedures. In fact, Dr. Cabin tailors a facelift surgery to each of his patients. This ensures a facelift patient can achieve a balanced and natural-looking facial appearance.
Benefits of Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery is one of the best ways to fight the signs of age, giving patients a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance that can take decades off of their appearance. A facelift procedure tightens the skin around the face, helping to get rid of unsightly skin folds, drooping jowls, loose skin, and excess fat. By eliminating loose skin and folds around the face, the elegant contours of the patient’s face is revealed for all to admire. This uncovers a more youthful facial shape that flaunts healthy and tight facial muscles. Facelift surgery leaves patients feeling more beautiful and youthful, emboldened with a newfound sense of confidence.
Am I Eligible for Facelift Surgery?
Dr. Cabin generally takes the same approach to facelift surgery for men and women. He first requests a patient consultation to find out if an individual qualifies for a facelift. If Dr. Cabin determines a patient is a good candidate for facelift surgery, he then crafts a custom treatment plan for this individual.
During a facelift surgery consultation, Dr. Cabin evaluates a patient's facial features and treatment goals. He also uses the Aging Arc, a state-of-the-art tool that visually defines the natural aging process relative to a patient's chronological age.
If a facelift patient falls within a negative range on the Aging Arc, this individual appears older or younger than his or her actual age. Dr. Cabin wants a facelift patient to fall within a positive range on the Aging Arc. If facelift surgery can help a patient achieve this goal, Dr. Cabin is happy to perform the procedure.
Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
Dr. Cabin will determine if a patient is a candidate for facelift surgery during a facelift consultation process. However, candidates for facelift surgery include anyone who finds that their face features loose skin, a loss of facial volume or collagen, sagging or drooping skin, prominent lines and wrinkles, and asymmetrical facial features caused by the effects of aging.
What Does the Facelift Consultation Process Involve?
The key to the facelift consultation is determining where the patient lies on the natural aging curve. Dr. Cabin uses a cutting-edge device that can measure the age of an individual’s face based solely on the face’s appearance, rather than relying on chronological age. Once a determination is made on how old the face appears to be, Dr. Cabin will compare the data to what is expected of someone in the patient’s age group. If the patient looks older than they actually are, Dr. Cabin devises a comprehensive plan to get the patient’s face looking younger than their biological age. During the consultation, Dr. Cabin will also learn about the patient's medical history, answer any questions the patient may have, and provide them with their best facelift options moving forward.
How Is Facelift Surgery Performed?
Facelift surgery is usually completed under general anesthesia and performed as an outpatient procedure, and a typical facelift requires about three to four hours to complete. During a facelift, Dr. Cabin makes his initial incisions and separates the facial and neck skin from underlying tissue and muscle. He next repositions facial and neck tissue and muscle. Dr. Cabin also removes excess skin as needed. Finally, Dr. Cabin lays the remaining skin over the facial and neck tissue and muscle.
The facelift recovery process takes several weeks to complete. At this time, a patient may experience bruising, swelling and other short-term side effects.
Dr. Cabin provides aftercare instructions to each of his facelift patients. These instructions must be followed to achieve the best-possible facelift results.
Facelift patients heal at different rates. In most instances, the full results of a facelift become visible within about six months of surgery, and they may last up to 15 years.
Dr. Cabin requests post-surgery appointments with his facelift patients. These appointments allow Dr. Cabin to track facelift results and ensure a patient's recovery stays on course.
What Does the Facelift Recovery Process Include?
Facelift surgery is a complicated procedure, so the facelift recovery process can take some time to complete. However, it is important to remember that results vary from patient to patient, as each individual is different and may heal at a unique rate. Patients can expect to have bruising, swelling, facial tightness, muscle weakness, and ear numbness following the facelift procedure. Facial muscle weakness should go away after a day or two, and bruising and swelling should subside after one to two weeks. Patients should expect to return to work in around two weeks, and get back to strenuous physical activity in around three weeks. Even after the initial healing process is complete, there may still be some slight side effects or secondary healing occurring for up to six months after the facelift procedure.
